If you're new to the world of direct mail marketing, here are some terms you should know. A database is a list of businesses or customers, usually containing a name, address, occupation, email, and other pertinent information. Data capture is the process of manually entering data into a computer. This typically involves names and addresses. After the data has been entered, it needs to be processed, or sorted and organized, to ensure that it is of high quality.

There are several ways to use lists. A house file refers to an organization's internal database of customers and prospects. This database will yield the best response from direct mail marketing. A householding strategy is a common practice in direct mail marketing, and is used to reduce costs by mailing multiple pieces of mail in one envelope. In addition, multiple family members living at the same address are considered duplicates, depending on the application. Finally, list maintenance involves adding new records, deleting old ones, and updating mailing addresses.

Many of these terms are the same as those used in digital marketing, such as search engine optimization. However, there are some unique terms and some of them may be outdated or even redundant. Some print industry veterans may still use older terms in order to keep up with the latest trends in advertising and customer data. It's also important to be familiar with the terms used in direct mail. The New Direct Mail Glossary is a great resource for direct mail marketing.
